Description
Gathering is a new addition to our lineup, first arriving at S&S in the later half of the Spring/Summer '26 season, with the initial drop landing at our Berkeley & NYC stores before making it to our website shortly after. It's a more obscure brand, hard to find information on and even harder to find in person, so we're glad to have Gathering on our shelves, and hope you'll have a chance to handle it personally, as we feel their styles are much easier to understand when they can be tried on and touched.
As Gathering themselves tell it, their primary project is textile research, work they're completing through garment production and "buttonology" — put more plainly, they're developing completely custom natural fabrics at small mills and local producers around the world, then finishing their garments with custom and bespoke trims to make pieces that are truly unlike anyone else. Based out of London, they don't limit themselves to sourcing from a singular specific nation or region, instead seeking out artisans across Africa, Asia, and anywhere else that small batch and hand-loomed organic fabrics can be made.
The Fisherman Jacket is somewhere between a blazer and a chore coat, cut with a convertible collar and a 3-button placket, and lined with 100% organic cotton for extra comfort. It's got a much more tailored silhouette, with a dual back vent, darts for shaping, and "triangles" beneath the sleeves to assist with ease of movement, as well as functioning button cuffs and three external pockets. The various buttonable areas all close up with handmade ceramic buttons, no two of which are exactly alike — a small but ultimately very impactful detail.
It's made from a black stonewashed linen from Japan, with an extremely breezy, fluid movement and a soft, comfortable texture. The stonewashed finish gives the fabric a less pristine texture, softening things without aging them too severely, and allowing it to continue to fade and develop a patina from further wear. Like any good linen, it breathes well and dries quickly, making it an excellent choice for the warmer seasons, or just for layering.
