The leather itself is difficult to produce and sensitive to work with, as this isn't just any natural (undyed) veg-tan leather, this horsehide is tanned and dyed with persimmons.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKakishibu is a traditional Japanese dying technique that uses aged persimmon tannins, with \"Kakishibu\" literally meaning \"persimmon astringency\". Kakishibu has also been called “Taiyo-zome (sun-dye)” due to the photosensitivity of the dye - areas exposed to light will grow darker and richer in tone, eventually reaching a true persimmon color. As a result of this increased photosensitivity, this Kakishibu horsehide will age faster than most natural veg-tan leathers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pattern is minimal, Y'2 basing their design on WWII era Type-I jackets, but stripping it of the traditional embellishments like a buckle back or back pleats. This allows the leather to do the talking, showing off the impressive horsehide and Y'2's masterful cutting, and ensures more consistent patina across the entire jacket.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe front features a single open chest pocket, with the classic double pleats running up the sides of the placket. The whole thing closes up with just four donut buttons, same buttons as on the cuffs - these buttons can be a bit tough at first, but break in quickly with use. The body is lined with a 100% cotton twill, a lightweight dark brown fabric that breathes well in warmer weather. The back features a dropped western yoke and split paneling, as well as two brass buckles at the back sides of the hem that can be used to adjust the fit. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe leather is a mid-weight Japanese horsehide that's been hand overdyed black and will fade to lighter tones of brown in high wear areas very quickly. The leather started out as an undyed vegetable tanned leather (one of our favorites), but was then overdyed black before the panels were cut and sewn into the jacket you're reading about. The dyes applied by hand are much more unstable than other ways of turning leather black, like drum dyeing, aniline finishing or paying an old man to yell at it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vegetable tanned horsehide leather is 1.4mm thick and fairly supple from the get-go. Following the tanning process, each hide is hand dyed black individually, with the dye being applied over multiple hand brushings. The finished product is inconsistent by design, having all sorts of variation between fully black and dark brown. Over time, the black dye will fade in areas of high movement or abrasion, revealing the brown base and lighter tea core underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDue to the hand-painted nature of the hides, each jacket will be different, with some panels appearing lighter or darker than others. Some jackets will be almost entirely black, while others may be almost completely brown, and more will still be a mix of the two. Even brand new, no two of these jackets are quite alike, and over time they will age even more uniquely with how they are worn.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fit is pretty standard, running true to size, with an average (not slim) fit through the chest. The horsehide is fairly supple even before break in, and two massive gussets hidden beneath the back panels give an incredible range of movement with ease. We've never felt a western shirt like this. The leather is finished with a simple drum-dying process, where they're rolled around in large wooden barrels full of water and dye. This process is slow, more so than other dying and finishing techniques, but results in the full color and extra soft temper of the leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lighter of the two options - the camel orange leather will darken over time in areas exposed to sunlight. The lighter tone of this steerhide will likely pick up unique marks and stains over the course of its life, developing in a more dynamic way than the black leather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese run true to size, on the slimmer side. Hand-dying results in greater variation with regards to overall color, as well as less \"stability\", meaning the pigments will wear away more quickly than other dyeing techniques (like drum dyeing, aniline finishing or paying an old man to yell at it).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vegetable tanned horsehide leather is 1.4mm thick and fairly supple from the get-go.
