Wrapped around that last is black Horween Chromexcel, tanned in the USA - and not just any CXL, John Lofgren Bootmaker select only the best hides from the highest quality grade offered by Horween.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChromexcel cowhide an extremely sturdy and handsome leather that only gets better and better with time. Horween Black CXL is a tea-core leather, meaning the dye hasn't fully penetrated the hide, sitting only at the surface above a \"natural\" brown core. Over time, that black dye will scuff off and wear down in certain areas, revealing a tan interior that will also darken and patina with wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs far as leather goes, it's thick and sturdy, starting out noticeably stiff and requiring a few weeks of good wear to really break-in. After that, the leather begins to relax considerably, moulding to take the shape of the wearer's foot and softening at flex points to move more easily.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rest of the construction details are on par with that fantastic leather - Japanese steel shanks, British Goodyear welting, and brass-coated steel buckles made in Tokyo. Natural CXL is an extremely dynamic and (in our opinion underrated) leather - finished without any sort of dye applied, the leather starts out a light tan color and darkens over time, gaining a patina from light, moisture, and whatever else you may be walking through. Wrapped around that last is black Shinki horsebutt, produced at the Shinki Tannery in Japan and selected for the most handsome and prominent grain texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are a seasonally-returning edition of John Lofgren's iconic engineer boots, made from a thick black tea core Shinki Horsebutt.\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e Being a tea core leather, the black dye at applied to the hides does not fully penetrate the surface of the hides, leaving the flesh underneath undyed - over time, the black dye will wear and scuff off, \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003erevealing the brown core beneath.
