Wrapped around that last is black Horween Chromexcel, tanned in the USA - and not just any CXL, John Lofgren Bootmaker select only the best hides from the highest quality grade offered by Horween.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChromexcel cowhide an extremely sturdy and handsome leather that only gets better and better with time. Horween Black CXL is a tea-core leather, meaning the dye hasn't fully penetrated the hide, sitting only at the surface above a \"natural\" brown core. Over time, that black dye will scuff off and wear down in certain areas, revealing a tan interior that will also darken and patina with wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs far as leather goes, it's thick and sturdy, starting out noticeably stiff and requiring a few weeks of good wear to really break-in. After that, the leather begins to relax considerably, moulding to take the shape of the wearer's foot and softening at flex points to move more easily.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rest of the construction details are on par with that fantastic leather - Japanese steel shanks, British Goodyear welting, and brass-coated steel buckles made in Tokyo. Even the labels are made on shuttle looms. Laces and eyelets are dangerous in the tight confines of a tank, catching on things or melting. Straps made for a safer boot, and are used to this day. The boots themselves are taller, with gusset rising to nearly the top of the boot, making them waterproof and resistant to the deep mud of WWII. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe last that these boots are built around was created by taking mold from an original WWII pair, then fine-tuned to produce an elegant silhouette while staying true to the original. The uppers are a veg-tanned horsehide, with a full leather lining. They're Goodyear-welted with a UK-made storm welt for maximum weatherproofing. The soles are a custom Japanese-made reproduction of the original WWII US Army chequered patterned soles. This practice was done to add waterproofing to the roughout service boots issued at the time by polishing over the nap with as much wax as the boots would hold.
